Nevilla E. Ottley has conducted choirs since 1971 and orchestras since 1978. With a Master of Music in conducting from the Catholic University of America, she has appeared as a conductor at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D. C. (1994 Kennedy Center Messiah Sing Along, the 1992 Kwame Awards among several other engagements). Besides the Nevilla Ottley Singers (founded 1981), the Choral and Orchestral Society of the World Bank and IMF (1983-1988), the Takoma Park Symphony Orchestra (1988-1995, Ms. Ottley has guest conducted several other musical organizations including the Paul Hill Chorale, the Cleveland Singers, and Arlington Metropolitan Chorale. Many of the soloists who have sung under her baton are Detra Battle, Ann Gordon, the late Ben Holt, Alvy Powell, Janice Chandler, John LeSane, and Kevin Short.

 

Ms. Ottley’s annual venue is the Hallam Theatre of Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland, where she conducts operas. She has conducted on tour to the Caribbean as well as to South Dakota.

Her repertoire includes symphonies and orchestral of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Mendelssohn, and Sibelius, as well as choral works such as Elijah, The Creation, Messiah, Petite Messe Solonelle, Schicksalslied, the works of Black composers such as William Grant Still, Nunes-Garcia, Nathaniel Dett, Jose White, Chevalier de Saint Georges, and operas Treemonisha, A Christmas Miracle, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Colombo, and The Impresario.
